LIGHT YAGAMI - REASONS WHY HE FAILED BY NEAR IN DEATH NOTE
In my opinion Near succeeded for two reasons:
a) He already knew about the existence of the Death Notes which made everything easier for him
b) Mello’s hands-on actions regarding Kiyomi Takada helped him realize where he was making an error that would have gotten him killed with regards to the Death Notes being real and fake.
To say L failed is incorrect. L was unable to find physical proof of Light being Kira because he had no idea that Note Books of death existed so he had no idea of what he was looking for all along. And then when he learned about the notebooks, REM killed him. L’s biggest ‘mistake’ was that he didn’t just have Light apprehended and executed based on the heaps of circumstantial evidence he’d accumulated in a short amount of time. As L, he would have been able to do so, but he didn’t, because he wanted hard proof.
Light acknowledges that as well.
L failed for a couple of reasons after thinking about it from another question but…
- One, he failed because he saw light as a friend. Conflict of interest. Granted he didn't let that cloud his judgement or his job but it clearly made things harder to convict light because he kept making excuses for him once he met him.
- Two, L was in denial of the existence of death gods. He didn't want to believe they were real. Which then would hinder him from identifying the Death Note, the cause of death.
- Three, he believed the fake rules for a second there.
- Four, he never ran into namaoi back in the beginning. Granted L overlooked one important thing in raye pambers death “who was he looking at in the train?” Just before he died. Granted L did ask that question but matsuda distracted him and he probably forgot to go back to investigate. But thats not the point, namoai would have brought up the bus situation to L much earlier. And light even said the same thing…. The bus would exposed him much earlier because death note stuff happened on a bus where he got the name of an american fbi agent. L never did find out that little bit of information that light was on that bus and raye gave light his name
Near only won because mello did the foot work. Mello and near both came to the same conclusion that light was lying and playing pretend L but it took mello figuring out some information about light when faced to face with shuichiro yagami. (Near at first believed light was innocent till Mello gave him worthy information and proof) Shuichiro brought up why his son was cleared. This tipped off mello and lead him to the american fbi agents who were killed in japan. Mello then found out raye pamber was on a bus. Mello then finds out raye pamber was investigating light and caught himself in a situation where the man dies of heart attack. Mello even got to read the rules of the death note so it confirmed to mello that light was kira. (He realized the fake rules because another shikigami told him the rules were fake) But mello no longer had a base or muscles heads except matt to help him with “proof without a reasonable doubt” because misa was already exposed and a long time time ago. (But the evidence for Misa was deleted by watari, so Mello and Matt needed to re-expose Misa or figure out if L made a mistake in the second kira, near brought up that the second kira might be takada and not Misa, which was another mistake near made in the series.) Anyway, mello goes to the spk base and told near everything he knew. So mello lead near to success.
- Near had all the tools for success but he needed to slam someone who was potentially smarter than him and sneaky. So mello came up with the plan to use him and matt as physical bate and forces light or misa to use the death note.
- When the plan was going down. Mello realized light was having misa recute members with the power of kira and told near just before he dies. But takada exposed valuable information while with mello, that misa gave her the eyes and light was gonna make her the new goddess of his new world. This exposed misa had another book. But wasnt fully proof light could kill or ever killed.
- So to make mellos death not a waste. Near set up mikami's death note with normal college rule paper and forced makami to come out in the open to kill near but what he was finally exposing was lights direction to kill and lights original death note. And since everyone in the room could see ryuk and light was the orignal owner, it was proof without a reasonable doubt finally that light was kira. Mainly what exposed light officially was his original death note and the nanes of the american fbi and raye pamber. Light also didnt know one little thing of information that never caught up with him till the end. There were separate groups of fbi agents watching over two houses. 22 in total. 11 watched light and the other kid. But the first 11 that died were all watching sololy light which there names were in his original death note plus the name of the guy who robbed the bus who light was on that bus all back in the beginning.
Light was able to end L because Rem had a loyalty to Misa, which Light used to his own advantage.
By the time Near had the evidence to prove it, Light had become caught up in his own power and God complex, which led him to make mistakes. Or at least become less careful since he was convinced he couldn't be stopped. Between Mikami taking a step on his own, and Mello's whatever-his-plan-was, Near had the evidence and Light decided to go off on a mad “I'm the best” speech since he wasn't getting away with it by that stage.
It just ended with all these factors adding up to put Light on the spot. (SpotLight, lol sorry) I mean yeah, Near had the proof, but Light's final scenes are a sight worth watching by itself. The expressions on everyone's faces lol (sorry, I've gone off track, I have too much love for this series)
